Its primary function within an unvented domestic hot water system is to safeguard the storage cylinder from high pressure caused by thermal expansion. If the system pressure rises to a critical level, the valve opens automatically to discharge a controlled amount of water, protecting the tank and connected pipework from over-pressurisation.
